Soothing a Cold

Coughs and colds, it’s the time of year for them isn’t it? The moody weather this year isn’t helping this year I don’t think, temperatures seem to be fluctuating lot throughout the day, we’re adding layers, then taking them away just as quickly.

I’ve never been one to rely on medicines for colds, unless of course a doctor has recommended them, for the most part, they do just need to run their course. They can be soothed though, and I always turn to honey and lemon with a little bit of grated ginger to soothe a cold & sore throat.

Little Miss Abbie has a cough & cold brewing, we’re up since 2am! I figure the warm honey & lemon drink is in order. There is a bag of Carrageen Moss in the press with a recipe for a traditional soothing drink for coughs and colds on it. I’ll make her this and hopefully she will be feeling better in no time.

Carrageen Moss is a seaweed rich in calcium, vitamins and minerals. Honey has antioxidant and antibacterial properties, it is a great immune system booster. Lemons are rich in nutrients and a natural antiseptic. It is easy see how combining these three magic ingredients can provide some relief from the common cold.

Carrageen moss is widely available in  health food shops. 10665448_299510740257110_336607629_n

Preparing the Natural Cold Remedy

Rinse 5g of the Carrageen Moss under cold water. Place in a saucepan with 250g cold water, soak for 10 minutes before bringing to the boil and simmering for 20 minutes. Add 1-2 teaspoon (I used two for Abbie, one should be sufficient for an adult) honey to a glass, followed by a good squeeze of lemon juice. (For an adult, I would add a grating of ginger here too, anti viral and anti inflammatory, but my little lady won’t drink this if I’ve added it!) Strain the liquid from the moss into the glass and mix it well, add some cold water to cool it, mix again and encourage your patient to drink it while it’s warm.

Then it’s fingers crossed for a speedy recovery, less Peppa Pig and more sleep!!
