Last Friday saw the highly acclaimed Netflix Original series The Crown hit our screens. I am hooked! As a fan of historical dramas I was so excited about this series and I was not disappointed. From the very outset The Crown is genuinely intriguing.
The Crown focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world’s most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, and a young woman takes the throne….a new era is dawning. Peter Morgan’s masterfully researched scripts reveal the Queen’s private journey behind the public facade with daring frankness. Prepare to be welcomed into the coveted world of power and privilege and behind locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace….the leaders of an empire await.
Claire Foy does a superb job in capturing the essence of the young Queen. From her mannerisms to her accent to her stance; there is absolutely no doubt in your mind that this is Queen Elizabeth II.
We are given a fascinating insight into her relationship with Prince Philip, perfectly portrayed by Matt Smith. It is easy to forget that they were a young couple, not long married and very suddenly, thrust into a life that dictated their every moment.
John Lithgow gives us a captivating performance as Sir Winston Churchill and it is fascinating to watch the relationship between him and the young Queen develop.
It is abundantly clear from the outset that no expense was spared in the production of The Crown. The intricate detail of the costumes is outstanding, with so many of them being actual replicas of original costumes worn by Queen Elizabeth II.
The Crown is streaming now on Netflix, if you haven’t started watching I highly recommend you do. With a second season confirmed this is set to be a huge hit for Netflix.
As a member of the Netflix Ireland Stream Team I have received complimentary Netflix membership and in return will be featuring Netflix related blog posts. All opinions are my own!
