Valentine’s Day

It’s very easy to get swept up in commercialism associated with Valentine’s Day, the overpriced chocolates, the €6.00 square card and what not. It’s also very easy to avoid that. I’ll admit, I was one of those cynical people who saw Valentine’s Day as a Hallmark celebration but do you know something? Time, experiences, circumstances and perspective; all of those things change a person and change their attitude. They certainly did me.

We are all so caught up with busy lives that it’s perfectly okay, perfectly lovely even, to take this one day and just stop and think. Tell the boy you love him, shower the girl with kisses, smother your children in hugs, call the friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, bake the cake you’d love as a treat. Take time to show a little love, to give a little love, to have a little love.

There does not need to be a bunch of extortionately priced flowers, gold wrapped jewellery or five-course meals in a fancy restaurant. Simply take time, time to listen, to share an extra few minutes after the bedtime story, time to share with a friend over coffee & cake.

Valentines Day does not only need to be about romantic love, celebrate all the love. The love you have as a friend, as a child, a parent, a person. Step back and just love.
