Festive Musings

Christmas Tag

I’ve just finished reading a lovely post from Lisa over at Four Walls Rainy Days, it’s her contribution to the Christmas tag. It’s a lovely idea, bringing bloggers together to share Christmas memories. As a huge fan of Christmas I thought it would be nice to join the Christmas tag, share a little about our festive celebrations,  the more the merrier as they say 🙂

This was added to our tree after the arrival of our last little elf 🙂

1. What is/are your favourite Christmas movies?

Santa Claus the Movie

My favourite Christmas movie as a child was Santa Claus the movie, my Mam used to tell us this was the real tale of how Santa came to be. I was thrilled to get a copy of it for my own children a few years ago and really enjoyed watching it with them.   We also love The Polar Express, The Muppets Christmas Carol and my son discovered Home Alone last year and had such a giggle watching it 🙂

2. Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Morning?

We always opened one present on Christmas Eve and the rest after seeing what Santa brought on Christmas Morning, then all of my Mam’s family gathered in my Nana’s house where more gifts would be exchanged, there’d be laughter, tales of what Santa brought to everyone and my Granddad pouring many glasses of red lemonade for the children and something a bit more grown up for the adults! I have carried on the tradition of opening a gift on Christmas Eve with my own children, they look forward to it all day!

3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?

I always loved Christmas, the butterflies in your tummy on Christmas eve, wondering how on earth I would ever get to sleep! Helping my Nana with the Christmas puddings is another one, we had to stir the mixture and make a wish beore the puddings were wrapped in muslin and hung from the ceiling! I think however,  my favourite Christmas memories are the more recent ones, my first Christmas with Mr. S/H was very special as was our first Christmas as Mammy & Daddy, our now 14 year old was 6 months old.

4. Favourite festive food?

Mince pies, I feckin’ love them! I use the same pastry recipe my Mam used, I now make my own mince meat, lots of it and make copious amounts of these delicious festive must haves, Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without them. Mr S/H looks forward to his Christmas dinner all year long lol, it is his favourite meal of the year!

5. Favourite Christmas gift?

In 2010 Mr. S/H & I were 10 years married, that Christmas he gave me an eternity ring so that’s a pretty special one.

6. Favourite Christmas scent?

I love all the scents associated with Christmas, mincemeat ingredients mingling together in a saucepan, the turkey roasting nicely in the oven, mulled wine or cider on a chilly evening, cloves & clementines, cinnamon & ginger, they’re all wonderfully heart warming smells and evoke many a happy memory from my childhood.

Mulled cider ingredients…yum!

7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?

Every year we cook the turkey and ham Christmas eve, prep the vegetables and have mulled wine. We get the children bathed and into their new Christmas pj’s, everyone in Ireland gets new pj’s Christmas eve don’t they??? They watch a movie, I read The Night Before Christmas to them and then they open a gift from under the tree. Before they go to bed the children all have very important  jobs to do, reindeer food is left out to help guide Rudolph, a special magic key is left out for Santa, a snack of cookies that I make with the children the day before Christmas eve along with a clementine for Rudolph is left by the fire. (We used to leave carrots but the children read in the paper one year that carrots give reindeers dreadful wind so now they leave a clementine instead!!) I’m not particularly religious, but my Mam was and so for her we have a crib and the baby gets placed in the crib on Christmas eve. We also light a candle in a lantern on the front door step and we leave it until it burns out itself, which is usually sometime Christmas night.

8. What tops your tree?

We have two trees, the main one in the sitting room has Santa sitting on top of it! The tree in the hall has a battered angel that our eldest girl took a shine too when she was little. I can’t see the angel lasting much longer, it’s had a few run ins with our littlest man this Christmas, the little man is winning 😉

9. As a kid, what was the one gift you asked for but never received?

I don’t think there was anything in particular, we were always quite happy on Christmas morning.

10. What is your favourite Christmas song?

Fairytale of New York without a doubt, I love it, though I do have a fondness for the original Band Aid, Do they know it’s Christmas and sure you couldn’t let Christmas go by without a listen to Last Christmas by Wham!

11. What’s the best part of Christmas for you?

The family time, the day to day madness that has become normality stops and we just spend time together, making new memories with the children and recalling fond times from Christmases past.

I’ve really enjoyed taking part in the Christmas tag, bringing lots of happy memories together. Do feel free take part & please link me to you answers when you join the party 😀
