For a long time, I have wished to visit the Christmas Markets in Edinburgh. Finally last weekend I did. They were just fabulous. The atmosphere was simply captivating and doesn’t fail to get you hyped up for Christmas.
The Christmas Markets
The Christmas Markets are held in the heart of Edinburgh in East Princes Street Gardens. Magical is the word that springs to mind as you enter the markets.
A host of traders reside in the market with wonderful bespoke gifts, crafts, and wares. Incredible aromas fill the air from the wide array of food vendors.
It is quite romantic wandering the markets, warming up with beautifully spiced mulled wine or cider, as joyful sounds ring out among the twinkling lights. As darkness descends over the city the festive atmosphere switches up a notch.
As adults take great pleasure in wandering among the various cabins, teenagers and young people reach new heights on the big wheel and Star Flyer. Not if you paid me would you get me up on that! It is almost 60 meters high!! Admittedly the views over Edinburgh must be truly awesome from that height, but, no thank you.
Younger children shriek in delight as they venture through Santa Land, the festive fairground with fun rides to keep them enchanted.
We had a very quick visit to Edinburgh, arriving on Saturday, leaving again on Sunday. Would I recommend such a short visit to experience the Christmas Markets? Absolutely!
Where We Stayed in Edinburgh
The bed and breakfast we stayed in is just lovely. I would definitely suggest B + B Edinburgh to anyone looking for recommendations. A picturesque 15 minute walk from Princes Street and a five minute walk from the bus stop, it was ideal for us.
The room was so comfortable and quite cosy. I would never tire of the view we had from our window. The staff were very friendly and breakfast was great. We couldn’t have asked for any better.
How We Traveled
We drove to the airport and left the car in the Blue carpark. That was €15 which I think was great value, I’ve paid more in the city for a couple of hours!! We flew with Ryanair, and took a bus into Edinburgh. The airport is 30 minutes from the city. We departed our bus at Haymarket, which was a five minute walk from our accommodation.
Our little trip has given me such a longing to visit more Christmas Markets in the future. It’s a great way to kick off the festive season.
