Festive Musings

Merry Christmas and………Relax

It’s been a busy time in the Simply Homemade Kitchen, as I’m sure it has been in many kitchens up and down the country.

There’s been an obscene amount of melted chocolate, bowl after bowl of buttercream icing, pastry and mincemeat, lots of time spent rolling, mixing and baking.

Mince Pies

A lot of the countless mince pies, the cupcakes and the Christmas puddings were all made to be gifted and many a time I thought I must be mad. As anyone who bakes will know it is a time consuming process and many other things were sacrificed in order to get all of these gifts ready, time when perhaps I should have been partaking in activities with the children, the housework has definitely suffered and as I’m surviving on little sleep these days thanks to a little fairy, I found myself tired.

However, when the children came home from school delighted at the reaction from their teacher to the cupcakes, mince pies and homemade cards they’d gifted them it was lovely. The children helped with the gifts, they were chuffed to have their efforts appreciated and so was I.

When the lady who provides much needed help throughout the school year was gifted a hamper with Chocolate Biscuit Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies & Festive Cupcakes among wine and chocs a couple of other little things, she was thrilled.

Caoimhe & Jack paid a visit to a neighbour this morning with more of the same and reported back that sheer joy was expressed at receiving these homemade delights.

So, yes, perhaps I am mad. Will I do things differently next Christmas?

In all honesty, probably not.

Now that Santa’s cookies have been baked, a simple chocolate chip shortbread cookie baked in a festive cookie pan, the baking is done, most of it has been gifted with just a couple more things to be delivered tomorrow. It took time, it took effort some days, but for the most part I enjoyed it. It’s wonderful giving something that you can visibly see a person enjoy and appreciate. There’s a lot to be said for it.

And there’s also a lot to be said for having it all done and being able to relax with a glass of wine, Christmas telly and over excited children as they await Santa’s arrival.

Merry Christmas
