Pom Pom Reindeer

My youngest children are six and seven, so you can only imagine the festive excitement that is starting to bubble in them. They both want to decorate their bedrooms for Christmas this year, so we are getting crafty. I really want them to know that they can decorate by making decorations and not buying things. Our first craft was Pom Pom Reindeer. The children really enjoyed making these, having lots of fun as they crafted away.

First up we gathered together everything we’d need to make the reindeer. You will notice there is twine in the photo, we didn’t actually use this.

  • Wool (I have lots of wool in my craft supplies, if you need to purchase some, Dealz have really good value wool for crafting)
  • Pom Pom Makers (you can use the old method with cardboard if you don’t have makers)
  • Mini Pom Poms – I got some in Dealz
  • Pipe cleaners – also from Dealz
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun

My children really enjoy making pom poms, though they do still need help with them. We made four, two slightly larger than the others. Then we trimmed them, leaving the ‘tail’ (the tied piece of wool) on the two smaller ones. This we tied a little bow on, for hanging them up.

The next step was antlers. We used a glittery gold pipe cleaner to make antlers. I used the glue gun to attach them.

We used pom poms for the eyes and noses. The children added black dots to white pom poms with a sharpie. Googly eyes would be perfect for eyes either, but we didn’t have any.

Then, with strict supervision and help from me, the children got to use the glue gun. We added a blob of glue to the larger pom pom and stuck the head on, pressing down to ensure it stuck.

And there we go, two pom pom reindeer and two happy children. This was such a simple little craft, that really did bring big smiles. Older children would most likely do it independently. Also, glue dots may work in place of the glue gun, but I didn’t have any.
